Savoring the South

Today we moved from Towns Bluff Park to Winfield Campground on the Savannah River in Georgia. This is a pristine Corp of Engineers campground on Strom Thurmond Lake, the largest dammed lake east of the Mississippi.

We like COE campgrounds; they are always on a lake, they most always have large RV sites that are far apart, they accept my National Park Pass for half off the already low price. Our site, with water and electricity costs a whopping $13 per night 😊.

Our site is on a point, surrounded on 3 sides by the lake, no close neighbors, and a huge space. This satellite photo was obviously taken when the lake was very low; it's much higher now. After looking around the campground and all 80 sites (most of which are empty), we definitely got the best spot - we seem to do that a lot. We do not typically reserve ahead; we would much rather pick our site from what's open upon our arrival.

Georgia on My Mind. . .

The Spring Migration has officially begun. We left Florida today 😕 and drove north to Towns Bluff Park just north of Hazlehurst Georgia. This is a lovely county park, nestled in the forest (just yesterday we were in the jungle!). Our RV site is huge, the place is very quiet with few campers, there are lots of hiking trails, and the Altamaha River is alongside the park.

On the Road Again

We left our dear friends at Bokeelia on Pine Island today, sad to go 😥. We just had a spectacular ten days with them 😊.

Starting the Spring Migration, moving slowly north.
We are here now - little RV park right on Orange Lake. We'll stay a few days & check things out.

Island Paradise #4

There is so much blooming here. . . these are my favorites.

Island Paradise #3

Tom and Kitty have created a little piece of heaven on Pine Island.

Island Paradise #2

Here's our trailer, snuggled in the jungle.

Island Paradise

We have been parked in the driveway of our friends, Tom & Kitty, at Bokeelia on Pine Island Florida for the past ten days. Their home, and the entire island is simply stunning - we feel like we are nestled in a tropical jungle.

There's a flock of wild peacocks that wander through the yard regularly. The guy has a magnificent tail and struts his stuff for his harem. Gotta love it!

SPRING!

Celebrating the first day of spring at Bokeelia, Pine Island, Florida. Full moon setting as viewed from our trailer.
Wishing you all the end of winter, wherever you are.

Pine Island

Yesterday we went fishing with our good friends Tom & Kitty. The have a great boat, perfectly outfitted for our saltwater excursion. We all caught fish, but only kept two spotted trout, which we had for supper last night. One dolphin swam alongside us, begging our small catches - which we happily shared.
We are going out again tomorrow.

Pine Island Florida #1

We are now parked in our friends', Tom & Kitty, driveway on Pine Island Florida. They have an awesome tropical paradise home here; we are in the jungle! They also have a great boat, and we're going out saltwater fishing today. Wish us luck!

The Neighborhood

We are at a private, and absolutely lovely, RV park at Ochobee Florida. This village boasts the smallest Post Office in the country. Yep, a real live US Post Office with a very nice Postmaster. When you mail something, he stamps it with the official 'smallest post office' stamp. An interesting piece of local history. And yes, we had a piece of outgoing mail.

Big Cypress National Preserve #2

Spotted on our self-guided tour through the preserve: alligators, turtles, and one magnificent owl. Plus lots of other birds, and fish.

Big Cypress National Preserve #1

Big Cypress is part of the Everglades ecosystem, and actually has retained more of the original swamps and vegetation. We did a lovely back country drive and saw the things we wanted to see - just incredible scenery and gazillions of bromeliads blooming.

Everglades #2

Yesterday we checked out the area around our RV park. We are on the north edge of the Everglades and adjacent to the Big Cypress National Preserve. So much to see & do! We got in some great alligator watching and also saw several manatees, but they were  too distant and too shy  to get pictures with my tablet.

Everglades #1

This is where we are, a little RV park that is a tropical paradise. These are shots of our 'yard'.

Florida Stop #4

Today we moved from central Florida to the north edge of the Everglades.  We weren't real comfortable with the place we had reserved a spot - their web site was lacking, as was the information imparted when we called. But we were lucky to even find a place to park our rig, so we took it.

Well, Glory Be! We landed in a little tropical paradise! We are delighted with the location, the RV park, and especially our space!

I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

Florida Stop #3

We moved from White Springs to near Haines City Florida, staying at a big old rv park on Lake Lowrey - about the tightest spot we've ever had but Jamie managed to get the trailer parked. . . eventually.

As we moved south we found the people and the traffic. I always thought Arizona had a gazillion snowbirds, but it's nothing compared to Florida. Huge rv parks here and you are challenged to find a spot if you don't reserve at least a year in advance, which would really cramp our style. We feel lucky to have found places to park and are happy to take what we get.

Next week we'll move down to the Everglades.
